origin of "Virudhunagar" name

History behind the name “Virudhunagar” Virudhunagar Town : District head quarters of Virudhunagar District Location : Madurai to Kanyakumari (NH7) Virudhunagar District1 comprises of – Tiruchuli Taluk, – Kariapatti Taluk, – Aruppukkottai Taluk, – Virudhunagar Taluk, – Sattur Taluk, – Sivakasi Taluk, – Srivilliputtur Taluk, – Rajapalayam Taluk. Chronology: British Times - Virudhugalvetti 1875 - Virudhupatti 06.04.1923 - Virudhunagar History of the name “Virudhunagar” About 400 years ago, according to a local legend, a warrior won many flags in token of having conquered many others, challenged the residents of the town. From then onwards, the town was known as Virudhuvetti. Virudhugal means banners or Awards2. Its history as an important trading town goes back to the British times when merchandise from Virudhunagar was exported overseas through the ports of Kulasekarapattinam, Tuticorin, Veppiar, Devipattinam.
