NPTEL provides E-learning through online Web and Video courses in Engineering, Science and humanities streams. The mission of NPTEL is to enhance the quality of Engineering education in the country by providing free online courseware.

The one day workshop on NPTEL - National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning jointly organized by NPTEL, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai and Dept. of Library and Information Science, Rev.Jacob Memorial Christian College, Ambilikkai, Dindigul, TAMILNADU, INDIA was attended by Mrs.P.Clara Jeyaseeli, MLIS., M.Phil., LIBRARIAN of V.V.Vanniaperumal College for Women, Virudhunagar on 02.02.2013.

More than 500 participants from different parts of India attended the workshop.  The workshop was highly motivating and it will be of maximum use for the learning community in a three dimensional manner.

Prof. Mangala Sunder Krishnan, Dept. of Chemistry, IIT Madras, Chennai led the workshop.  The workshop highlighted on the history and developments, the various quadrants involved in preparing the online Web and Video lectures, the peer-review process of the syllabus and the course materials and many more.   Some videos are also played and he explained on the technology tools involved in the preparation.  Really it was an eye-opener and thanks to the initiatives taken by the Ministry of HRD through the seven IITs of our nation and IISc.

Also he invited the faculty members to prepare online course materials for about 300 more courses which are yet to be assigned.  Further, the Information Science professionals are invited to assign metadata for about 80,000 web pages as per the internet protocol.

NPTEL current course-status summary as per Prof. Krishnan's workshop (as on 02.02.2013)

Total Courses titles covered                   : 1561
Courses with coordinators assigned     : 1231
Courses not assigned                              :   330

Features:

* All the courseware are freely available and they are downloadable;
* Subtitle is available in the video lectures for more understanding in regional languages;
* Courses for entrance exams like GATE are also available;
* Semester based course materials.

Importance of Technology Enhanced Learning:
  • Promote critical Thinking
  • Visualization and Visualization of concepts
  • Demonstration and hands-on experience
  • Integration of teaching and learning in synchronization with the environment
 Thanks to the efforts taken by Prof.V.P.Ramesh Babu, MLIS., M.Phil., Librarian and Head, Dept. of Library and Information Science, Rev.Jacob Memorial Christian College, Ambilikkai, Dindigul who has been given a greater privilege through his College Authorities.  I also thank our MHRD, IITs and IISc for the initiatives taken for enhanced learning.
